HINT SHEET #17
Match Form Analysis

Because reputation wins arguments… but form wins matches

📊 Match Form Analysis — Reading the Game Within the Game

Your squad’s ratings, skills, and attributes tell you what a player is capable of on paper. Match Form Analysis tells you what they’re actually delivering on the pitch right now. These two things are not always the same – and the gap between them is where smart managers find their edge. From week 6 of each season, two sets of form tables become available: one in your Manager’s Report focused entirely on your own squad, and one in the Matchday Magazine covering the top performers across the league. Both are built on the same underlying data – recent match performance – but they serve different purposes.

📍 1. Where to Find the Tables

Two documents, two perspectives:
DocumentTable NameScopeAvailable From
Manager’s ReportMatch Form AnalysisYour squad onlyWeek 6 of each season
Matchday MagazinePlayer Form Tables (×4)Top performers across the leagueWeek 6 of each season
💡 The Manager’s Report table is your private weekly view – nobody else sees it. The Matchday Magazine tables are public, which means your rivals can see who your best performers are just as easily as you can see theirs.

⚙️ 2. How the Momentum Form Score Works

Both tables are powered by the Momentum Form score, which is calculated from each player’s match performance ratings (shown as ⭐ to ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ in your detailed league match reports) across their last five league games. These five scores aren’t averaged equally – more recent performances carry more weight. A player who’s hit form in the last two or three weeks will climb the rankings quickly, while someone coasting on a strong early-season run will gradually slide down. Two conditions must be met before a player appears in either table:
  • They must have played at least 5 league matches this season
  • They are ranked only against players in the same position (GK, DEF, MID, ATT)
⚠️ A player with fewer than five appearances won’t show up at all. The sample size simply isn’t large enough to rank them fairly against players with a full run of games.

📰 3. The Matchday Magazine: Player Form Tables

Each week the Matchday Magazine publishes four position-specific form tables – one each for Goalkeepers, Defenders, Midfielders, and Attackers. To give every division regular coverage, the tables rotate on a five-week cycle.
Cycle🧤 Goalkeepers🛡️ Defenders🎯 Midfielders⚡ Attackers
1Division 1Division 2Division 3Division 4
2Division 2Division 3Division 4Division 1
3Division 3Division 4Division 1Division 2
4Division 4Division 1Division 2Division 3
5All DivisionsAll DivisionsAll DivisionsAll Divisions
💡 After Cycle 5, the rotation starts again. The Cycle 5 edition is worth paying particular attention to – it’s the one week where you can see the best performing players across the entire league, regardless of division. A useful scouting opportunity if you know what you’re looking for.

📖 4. Column Guide

The tables share a common structure, though a handful of columns are exclusive to one document or the other. Player Information

Season to Date
ColumnMeaning
FormAverage performance across all league matches played this season
ImpactPercentile ranking among players in the same position – e.g. 95% means better than 95% of players at that position this season
🔍 A player’s form performance isn’t always a reflection of their rating or skill level. Even a lower-rated player can deliver outstanding displays and climb the rankings, while a highly rated squad member can drift into poor form and slide down. The tables tell you what’s happening right now – not what the attributes say should be happening.

📋 5. Reading the Descriptors

Alongside the raw numbers, the tables translate each score into a plain-language descriptor so you can assess a player at a glance without having to mentally parse percentages and weighted averages. 🔥 Momentum — based on recent performance across the last 5 league games
DescriptorWhat It Means
Ice ColdVery poor recent form
StrugglingBelow average
SteadySolid and consistent
On FormPlaying well
Red HotAmong the best in the league recently
On FireElite recent performances
📈 Trend — direction of travel, comparing recent form against season form
DescriptorWhat It Means
ExplodingMassive improvement
SurgingRapid improvement
ImprovingNoticeable improvement
StablePerforming as expected
DecliningSlight drop in form
SlumpingMajor drop
CollapsingSevere decline
⭐ Impact — season-to-date contribution relative to other players at the same position
DescriptorWhat It Means
AnonymousLittle impact across the season
FringeRarely influential
SupportiveUseful squad player
ReliableDependable performer
ImportantKey team contributor
InfluentialMajor contributor
Driving ForceOne of the team’s leaders this season
Season DefiningElite performer across the whole campaign
💡 The three descriptors work best together. A player who is On Fire with a Surging trend and an Important season impact is someone to build your team around right now. A player who is Struggling with a Declining trend but a Reliable season impact might just be going through a temporary dip – worth rotating rather than dropping entirely.

🎯 6. How Smart Managers Use This

The real value of these tables is combining what you see here with everything else you know about your squad – and your opponents.
  • Peak form – On Fire / Red Hot. Keep this player in the starting XI and build your tactics around them while it lasts.
  • Rising form – Improving / Surging trend. Could be ready for a bigger role or a step up in responsibility.
  • Dropping form – Declining / Slumping trend. May need rotation, rest, or a tactical rethink before the slide becomes a problem.
  • Season leaders – Driving Force / Season Defining. Your most valuable performers this season. Protect them, and think twice before loaning or selling.
The Matchday Magazine tables are just as useful for keeping tabs on the competition. If a player in a rival squad is consistently showing On Fire momentum ahead of a match between you, factor it into your tactical planning. And if they’re carrying a Season Defining impact rating, they might be worth a transfer approach too.

🏆 Final TipRatings, skills, and experience tell you what a player is worth on paper. Match Form Analysis tells you what they’re actually delivering right now. The best squads are built on quality – but the best results come from knowing who to pick this week. Use both.
