L1 | S4 | W8: Plymouth storm the summit as West Ham send Walsall tumbling
📰 Week 8 in Review – Season 4
The Division 1 table has a new leader for the first time since Week 5. Plymouth Argyle’s 1-0 win at Carrow Road – one of the four televised games this week – combined with Walsall’s shock home defeat to West Ham to hand Carl’s side the summit on 15 points. David Griffiths’ side, who had looked like the most settled club in the division just seven days ago, are now fourth. The League Cup Last 16 also delivered: Arsenal knocked out of the cup by Stevenage, Chelsea needing extra time to survive Wimbledon, and a Quarter-Final draw that sets up some tasty ties for Week 21.
Division 3 threw up the most intriguing table in the whole league. Arsenal, Manchester City and Stevenage are all on 16 points – separated only by goal difference. There is 22 games left to play, and a title race that was starting to look like a two-horse contest now has three horses all pointing the same way.
| Div | Leader | Pts | 2nd place | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Plymouth Argyle | 15 | Sutton United | +1 |
| 2 | Stockport County * | 16 | Huddersfield Town | 0 |
| 3 | Arsenal * | 16 | Man City / Stevenage | 0 |
| 4 | Chelsea | 20 | Hull City | +3 |
* Joint leaders — separated by goal difference only
🏆 Division 1 – New name at the summit
Walsall walked into Week 8 as clear leaders, one point ahead of the chasing pack. West Ham had other ideas. AJP’s side – who had managed just one win in their previous five outings – produced their most convincing performance of the season at the Bescot Stadium, Mangala striking on 72 minutes and Lacazette putting the gloss on it in the 85th. The 2-0 win felt deserved, which will sting Walsall all the more. David Griffiths’ side have slipped from first to fourth, and the gap between top and fifth is now just three points.
The beneficiary is Plymouth Argyle. Carl’s side were the televised game at Carrow Road, and they made it count – Salah’s 71st-minute strike the only goal in a controlled 1-0 win. Plymouth had been as low as 12th in Week 4; they have climbed steadily and quietly, and sit at the top of Division 1 for the first time in Season 4. It is worth noting that the table is anything but settled: Rangers, Harrogate Town and Shrewsbury Town are all on 12 points, meaning six clubs sit within three points of the leaders.
Elsewhere in Division 1, Port Vale put together their most emphatic result of the season – 3-0 against Shrewsbury Town, Ronaldo with a brace at the tenth and 75th-minute mark and Naismith adding a third in stoppage time. Shrewsbury, who were second going into the week, crashed six places and now sit eighth on 12 points. Harrogate Town kept their momentum going with a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, goals from Mayer, Saka and Kang-in overturning an early deficit. And Newport County finally got a result that had been threatening – Coda’s 69th-minute header beating Liverpool 1-0, edging Justin Arandjelovic’s side off the foot of the table and sending Liverpool down to 15th.

| 3 | Lincoln City | 13 | +3 |
| 4 | Walsall | 13 | 0 |
| 5 | Port Vale | 12 | +3 |
⚠️ Walsall have gone from first to fourth in a single afternoon. They had looked the most settled club in Division 1 for much of the season – but West Ham, of all sides, found their form at precisely the wrong moment for the leaders. The manner of the defeat, at home against a team on four losses in five, will concern David Griffiths as much as the result itself.
💡 Sutton United deserve more recognition than they are getting. Daffy Duck’s side are second on 14 points after Caprari’s 64th-minute winner at Peterborough, and they have only been beaten twice in eight games. They do not generate many headlines, but they are right in the middle of this title race and have been quietly building one of the most consistent records in the division.
💙 Division 2 – The bottom begins to bite
Stockport County and Huddersfield Town remain locked together at the summit, both on 16 points. Matt Rose’s Stockport were held to a 1-1 draw at Cheltenham Town, while Tim W’s Huddersfield extended their perfect home record with a 2-1 win over Cambridge United – Cavani with a brace on 22 and 86 minutes, Moro pulling one back for Cambridge in between. The top two look set for the long haul. It is the bottom of the division that demands attention now.
Brighton & Hove Albion are in genuine danger. Ian Dance’s side lost 1-2 at home to York City – Welbeck scoring both goals inside the first 25 minutes before Flores pulled one back for Brighton in the 43rd – and they now sit 16th on four points. One win from eight games, five defeats in their last five, and a home record that reads one win from six at the Falmer Stadium. Newcastle United lost 0-1 to Stoke City, Ferguson settling it with a late 87th-minute goal, and they join Brighton at the bottom on four points. Both clubs are running out of time to establish themselves in this division.

| 1 | Stockport County | 16 | +6 |
| 2 | Huddersfield Town | 16 | +7 |
| 3 | Brentford | 14 | +2 |
| 4 | Barrow | 13 | +5 |
| 5 | Cheltenham Town | 13 | +2 |
⚠️ Brighton’s form over the last five reads one point from fifteen available, with twelve goals conceded. Their home record – previously something to build on – has become a liability. Ian Dance needs to find answers quickly. Five points from safety after eight games is still retrievable, but the current trajectory is not pointing upward.
💡 Huddersfield have yet to concede a single goal at the Kirklees Stadium this season. Four wins, seven goals scored, nothing given away at home. The outstanding question for Tim W’s side remains entirely unanswered after eight games: can they take anything on the road? They have yet to win away from home in any of their four attempts this season.
❤️ Division 3 – Three into one
Nobody gave Derby County much chance going into their home game against the Division 3 leaders. Manchester City had topped the table for weeks, had the best home record in the division, and were one point clear of everyone. But Ben Cole’s Derby put in a performance that the match report barely captures – Silva getting the only goal inside two minutes, and Pride Park holding on for a 1-0 win that left Manchester City manager Eusebio 21 with real questions to answer.
The result dragged City back into a three-way tie they would much rather have avoided. Arsenal drew 2-2 at Fulham – Son and Öztürk for the hosts, Nolan and Bissouma responding late for Gaz Sinnotti’s side – which means the Gunners are now level with City on 16 points. Stevenage completed the three-way deadlock with a 2-1 win at Leeds United, Mateta scoring twice inside the first half-hour. All three clubs sit on 16 points; it is only goal difference that separates them, with Arsenal’s +9 keeping them on top of the pile ahead of City and Stevenage on +4 each.
Forest Green Rovers are right in behind them. Phil McCracken’s side beat Everton 2-1 – Bendtner on 6, Bull adding a second on 67 – and are now fourth on 15 points, one off the leaders. A club that started the season with little fanfare is quietly becoming one of the stories of Division 3.

| 2 | Manchester City | 16 | +4 |
| 3 | Stevenage | 16 | +4 |
| 4 | Forest Green Rovers | 15 | +3 |
| 5 | Aberdeen | 12 | +6 |
🔍 Derby County deserve serious attention. Ben Cole’s side are eighth in the table on ten points, but they have the best home defensive record in Division 3 – not a single goal conceded in three home games at Pride Park, five scored. The 1-0 win over the title pacesetters was no fluke. Anyone visiting Pride Park over the next month should plan accordingly.
💡 Arsenal’s goal difference of +9 is a buffer that matters while the three-way tie holds. They have kept four clean sheets at the Emirates this season. If Gaz Sinnotti’s side can maintain that defensive solidity, both City and Stevenage will need to beat them directly to leapfrog them – which makes Week 9’s fixture a significant one.
💛 Division 4 – Chelsea clear, but Luton are closing
Chelsea are not slowing down. Loz Newbold’s side beat Colchester United 2-0 – Harbi getting the first on 65, Džeko adding the second on 77 – and now sit on 20 points from eight games, unbeaten, with a goal difference of +11. Three points clear of Hull City and Sheffield United, who are tied on 17, Chelsea are starting to look like a side that has figured this division out.
The more interesting development is just below the top three. Luton Town are fourth on 15 points, and over the last five matches they have picked up 13 points – the same haul as Chelsea over the same period. Salvatore’s side are winning the games they need to win: Højlund’s goal in the eighth minute was enough for a 1-0 win at Wimbledon, and their away record now shows two wins, one draw and one loss. They are not the loudest club in the division, but they are making a very strong case for a top-four finish.
Worth keeping an eye on: Tottenham Hotspur, eleventh in the table but with the fifth-best form record in Division 4 over the last five games. Mark Wilson’s side came from behind to beat Leyton Orient 2-1 – Rhodes and Pépé both on the scoresheet after Vieira’s opener had them trailing at half time – and have now won three of their last five. The table does not reflect that yet, but it will if they keep it up.

| 2 | Hull City | 17 | +8 |
| 3 | Sheffield United | 17 | +5 |
| 4 | Luton Town | 15 | +3 |
| 5 | Oxford United | 14 | +3 |
💡 Luton Town’s points-per-game over the last five matches (2.60) is identical to Chelsea’s. Salvatore has built something genuinely solid at Kenilworth Road. Four points off the top with 22 games still to play is still very much a title race position – and nobody seems to be talking about them yet.
🏆 League Cup – Quarter-Final draw confirmed
Eight clubs collected £90,000 prize money for their exits in this week’s Last 16. The big result of the round was Stevenage’s 2-1 win over Arsenal in the Division 3 group – knocking out one of the division’s title favourites in the process. Chelsea needed extra time to see off Wimbledon, eventually winning 3-2. York City edged out Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 AET in the Division 2 group, and in Division 4, Southend United beat Luton Town 2-0 to claim their Quarter-Final place.
The Quarter-Final ties are scheduled for Week 21. Clubs knocked out in the Quarter-Finals will receive £150,000 in prize money.
| Quarter-Final fixture |
|---|
| Chelsea v Stoke City |
| Shrewsbury Town v Stevenage |
| Southend United v Forest Green Rovers |
| York City v Walsall |
💡 Stevenage have already beaten Arsenal twice this season – once in the League Cup Round 2 and now again in the Last 16. Dynamo Drongo’s side face Shrewsbury Town in the Quarter-Finals. Given their current form, they are not to be underestimated.
🗞️ Around the league
This week’s score draw competition had eight qualifying draws and three correct entries. Paul Lamming of Lincoln City, Chris Earle of Blackburn Rovers and Del Sharratt of Port Vale each take home £266,666. Congratulations to all three – Del Sharratt will have been particularly pleased with how his week went overall, given Port Vale’s 3-0 win in the league as well.
There was crowd trouble at two matches. The Cambridge United and Huddersfield Town game was the most serious: 77 arrests, 14 officers injured and £97,198 of stadium damage. Ipswich Town versus Aberdeen also had incidents: 73 arrests, 9 officers injured and £80,547 of damage. Both clubs will be dealing with the consequences.
The transfer activity this week was headlined by Abdoulaye Touré joining Manchester City from the Supremos Circuit for £4,019,999 – a competitive bidding process that attracted seven clubs, with Blackburn Rovers the nearest rival at £4,000,501. Everton secured Mark Skilling for £2,101,000, and Blackpool brought in Fabian Montabell for £2,800,082 after their own four-way bid competition.
Six players have been making the right kind of news this week. Lorenzo Davids (Blackburn Rovers), Niccolò Zanellato (Newport County), Asmir Begović (Portsmouth), Abdoulaye Touré (Manchester City), Paddy Kenny (Peterborough United) and Victor Anichebe (Derby County) have all been active in the community through school visits, humanitarian efforts, volunteer work and outreach programmes. Good to see.
On the rumour front, Thomas Gravesen (Tottenham Hotspur), Gary Taylor-Fletcher (Norwich City), Gerhard Tremmel (Hibernian) and Gabriel Magalhães (Manchester City) all make this week’s gossip columns for reasons their clubs will not welcome. None are confirmed – but managers who know their players’ personal profiles will know where to look for more context.
Finally, a brief note on the Match Engine V2 rebuild: if you have not yet read the full breakdown on what is changing, it is worth your time. Implementation is complete and testing is under way, with a go-live target around the start of July. Managers should expect noticeable improvements in result realism, player logic and the discipline system once V2 goes live.
