L2 | S3 | W24: Hearts silence Madrid as the title race enters its final stretch

📰 Week 24 in Review – Season 3

Seven games left and the European Elites is refusing to make things easy for anyone. Division 1 had five clubs inside five points going into this week, and while Hearts’ stunning win at Real Madrid has shifted the shape of that race considerably, nothing is settled. Birmingham City’s march to the Division 2 title continues on autopilot while the division below them descends into survival chaos. In Division 3, Bristol Rovers are inching toward confirmation of a title most of the division conceded weeks ago – but the more compelling stories are below them. And in Division 4, a four-way promotion race has narrowed, with Cardiff City and Leeds United pulling fractionally clear.

🏆 Division 1 – The Relegation Underbelly

Rapid Vienna lead on 41 after drawing 1-1 with Atletico Madrid – a result that helped neither. Heart of Midlothian, meanwhile, were doing what title chasers dream of: winning away from home, against the odds, at the worst possible time for the opposition. Bunbury put Hearts in front at the Bernabéu in the 73rd minute, and Heskey sealed it in stoppage time. Real Madrid, winless in five and sitting on a goal difference of -16, are now staring down the barrel of relegation with seven games remaining. Bayer Leverkusen drew 1-1 at home to West Ham and remain level with Real on 21 and 18 points respectively – both clubs know the trapdoor is right beneath them.

⚠️ The bottom two are locked in slow motion. Real Madrid’s goal difference is -16, Bayer Leverkusen’s is 0. On current trajectory, Real go down. But Leverkusen have already dropped four points to West Ham this week and show little sign of finding the form to escape. James J E Harman’s Real Madrid side have not won in five. That statistic, at this stage of the season, is close to irreversible.

The more interesting story in the mid-table is Athletic Bilbao, who continue to render the form tables irrelevant for everyone else. Loz Newbold’s side beat Athletic Bilbao beat Huddersfield 2-0 through Cole and Carbone – that’s five wins from five in the recent run, and Bilbao now sit eighth on 34 points. They were eleventh three weeks ago. Rangers hammered Walsall 3-0, with Altidore completing a hat-trick by minute 48, and Cambridge United edged out a stubborn goalless draw at Southend to make it three draws in their last five. A nervy end to the season is on the cards for Marc da Silva’s side.

💡 Athletic Bilbao are the form team in Division 1 by a country mile – five wins from five, 15 points from 15, a perfect home and away record across that run. They are mathematically safe but there is something enjoyable about a side this deep in the table playing football this good.

💙 Division 2 – Sinking Ships at the Bottom

Birmingham City’s title is done in all but name. Leigh Bailey’s side beat Salisbury 1-0 through Kelly, extending their lead to seven points with seven to play. The mathematics are simple: any win from here seals it. The more pressing drama in Division 2 is at the wrong end of the table, where Manchester United, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich are all in serious trouble.

⚠️ Manchester United are 15 points with 21 goals conceded in 24 games. David Hopkins posted a message in the Notice Board this week – “Oh well! Have paid to the end of the season, so may as well see it through!!!” – which is the kind of dignified acceptance that relegation sometimes demands. Liverpool on 18 and Bayern Munich on 20 are not safe either. Two of those three are almost certainly going down.

Sheffield United’s Paul Warhurst continued his extraordinary season, scoring in the 16th and 86th minutes to beat Tottenham 2-1 and keep Ron Fluff’s side in ninth on 34 points. Warhurst has been doing this for weeks now. Middlesbrough beat Portsmouth 2-0 through Wolf and Ansó – Greg C’s side look genuinely comfortable in second, with Fulham and PSG chasing from a distance. Brighton beat Inter Milan 3-1, with Murphy, Luca, and Stokes on target. A useful win for Spud Murphy’s side, who were in danger of drifting out of the promotion conversation entirely.

❤️ Division 3 – The Quiet Climbers

Bristol Rovers’ title looks confirmed. David Griffiths’ side won at Leicester City through Perotti in the 27th minute and sit eight points clear on 53 with seven games left. Eleven home wins this season. They have not lost an away game in Division 3 this season. It is, by any measure, a dominant campaign.

The more interesting conversations in Division 3 are further down the table. Barcelona, who were eighth going into the week, beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 through a Watkins brace (42′, 71′) to move into seventh on 32 points. Ian Dance’s side have won four from five and are rising quietly. Sevilla FC beat Watford 3-0 through Dumfries, Greco, and a Dumfries second – Neil Moxey’s side up to ninth on 31, their best position of the campaign. Bradford City continue to punch above their weight: a 1-0 win over Arsenal keeps Andy Sillars’ side in eighth on 31 points, with Roldán’s 53rd-minute goal the difference.

🔍 Wolverhampton Wanderers’ overall form table ranking looks flattering given their league position. They sit 10th on 30 points, yet their away form over the last five games has been the best in Division 3 – four wins from five on the road. They just can’t buy a result at Molineux. Dave Hayes will have noted it.

At the bottom, Crystal Palace are on 13 points and have lost all five of their last five. Kidrock’s early weeks in charge have not produced the hoped-for bounce, and with six of the bottom seven clubs separated by only 16 points, the relegation picture is uncomfortably tight.

💛 Division 4 – The Mid-Table Movers

Cardiff City lead on 47 after a 2-0 win over AS Roma, with Vialli scoring twice (15′, 91′). Nonno Coia’s side are three clear of Leeds, who beat Newcastle 1-0 through Sarr. Port Vale climbed to third after beating York City 1-0 – Kris Bond’s side have now won four from five and sit on 41 points, level with Borussia Dortmund but ahead on goal difference.

Port Vale’s rise deserves particular attention. They were fifth a fortnight ago and in danger of losing touch with the automatic promotion spots entirely. Three wins in the last four – including this week’s 1-0 over York City – have seen them move back into third and level on points with Dortmund. Varney’s third-minute goal set the tone and Bond’s side held firm throughout. They are building momentum at exactly the right point of the season.

💡 Accrington Stanley won four from five and sit 11th on 28 points – their best run of the season. Steve Walker’s side beat Leyton Orient 2-1 through Alessio and Mitxelena and are looking like a team who have finally found their footing. They are not promotion contenders but this form, if sustained, makes them a awkward proposition for anyone still chasing. Nottingham Forest drew with Manchester City and remain in the Supremos Cup semi-finals while sitting 14th in their own division – a remarkable double act.

🏆 Supremos Cup – Semi-Finals Locked In

The League Cup semi-finals are set for Week 25, with Nottingham Forest – still a Division 4 side on 23 points – facing Portsmouth, and Sporting Lisbon taking on Charlton Athletic. The bookies make Sporting strong favourites at 1/3, while Forest are 9/4 against Portsmouth. Semi-final exit pays £220,000 to the losing sides.

The Supremos Cup semi-finals remain scheduled for Week 27: Celtic face Charlton Athletic, and Nottingham Forest take on Norwich City. It is worth noting that Forest are simultaneously in the semi-finals of both competitions while fighting to avoid relegation from Division 4. Whatever else happens this season, Chris Houldey has given the European Elites one of its more unlikely stories.

🗞️ Around the League

Four managers correctly predicted this week’s score draws, pocketing £200,000 each: michael kensett (Walsall), Gareth Murphy (Grimsby Town), Graeme Bonas (Marseille), and El_Diablo (Tottenham Hotspur). Congratulations to all four.

Crowd trouble flared at three league games this week. The worst incident came in Ajax’s 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund – 48 arrests, six officers injured, and £77,486 of stadium damage. Marseille’s 0-1 home loss to FC Porto saw 50 arrests and £69,038 of damage, while Real Madrid vs Hearts brought 31 arrests and £52,287 of stadium damage. The heaviest incident of all came in a friendly: Charlton Athletic’s 3-0 win over Napoli produced 61 arrests, seven officers injured, and £74,640 of damage. The Police Report makes for grim reading across the board.

Borussia Dortmund reached the Rival Awareness milestone this week and will now begin monitoring rival clubs from this point forward. The next threshold is 200 points to secure Official Rivalry status.

Austria Vienna remain unmanaged in Division 4. The dugout has been empty for some time now and the club sit eighth on 32 points – comfortably clear of relegation, but without anyone to take advantage of the position.

👀 Looking aheadWeek 25 brings the League Cup semi-finals – Forest face Portsmouth and Sporting Lisbon take on Charlton, with £220,000 on the line for the losers. In the league, the Division 1 title race resumes with Athletic Bilbao hosting Rapid Vienna – if Bilbao win that, things at the top get very interesting indeed. Down in Division 2, Manchester United host Fulham at Old Trafford, which may well be a relegation six-pointer dressed up as a mid-table fixture. Seven weeks left. Nothing is decided.

L2 | S3 | W22: Dortmund stumble as Cardiff seize control of Division 4’s four-way scramble

Nine games left in Season 3 and the European Elites is delivering on every front. The Division 1 title race is as tight as it’s been all season, with five clubs still mathematically in contention. Division 4’s promotion picture has reshuffled dramatically as Borussia Dortmund were beaten at home while Cardiff City pulled a point clear. And Division 2 has produced the story of the week: Sheffield United putting three past Manchester United without reply, a result that drags David Hopkins’ side into a relegation conversation that was already getting uncomfortable.

L2 | S3 | W19: Cardiff and Dortmund deadlocked as Larsen fires Southend’s first-half hat-trick

After 19 games, Cardiff City and Borussia Dortmund remain inseparable. Both won this week – Cardiff beat AC Milan 1-0 through Ramsey’s 61st-minute strike, while Jody Downey’s Dortmund put Port Vale away 2-0, Crouch with both goals late on – and both sit on 37 points. Nonno Coia’s Cardiff have the superior goal difference (+13 to +10) but the lead could change hands any week. This is shaping up to be one of the season’s most compelling storylines.

L2 | S3 | W18: Gyökeres fires Arsenal’s hat-trick as Bristol Rovers make the Memorial Stadium a fortress

The standout individual performance of the week came from Gyökeres of Arsenal, who completed a hat-trick at Wolverhampton Wanderers — striking on 51, 52, and 76 minutes in a 3-1 win. Three goals in the second half, two of them within a minute of each other: the kind of display that makes you understand why Arsenal have jumped two places to seventh and look capable of a promotion challenge from here.

L1 | S4 | W5: Port Vale silence Ibrox as the D1 title race blows wide open

Week 5 brought the League Cup back into the mix and delivered some of the most dramatic football of the season so far. Port Vale’s win at Ibrox was the headline result – Del Sharratt’s side knocked Rangers off the top of Division 1 and in doing so turned what looked like a two-horse title race into something considerably more complicated. Across the four divisions, form guides were torn up, comebacks were completed, and the points table looks a great deal less predictable than it did seven days ago.

L2 | S3 | W23: Bongonda’s hat-trick sinks Dortmund as Forest stun Barcelona in the Cup

The Supremos Cup quarter-finals finally arrived in Week 23, and they did not disappoint – three of the four ties produced single-goal margins, and Nottingham Forest pulled off the shock of the round, beating a Barcelona side that had looked increasingly dangerous. On league business, the title race in Division 1 tightened rather than resolved, the Division 4 scramble at the top produced a stunning four-goal swing, and Athletic Bilbao’s remarkable form run shows no signs of stopping. Eight games left across all divisions. Things are getting serious.
