L2 | S3 | W19: Cardiff and Dortmund deadlocked as Larsen fires Southend’s first-half hat-trick

📰 Week 19 at a glance

Week 19 of the European Elites season delivered a mix of the expected and the surprising. At the top of Division 1, the title race tightened just a fraction as Rapid Vienna failed to extend their lead, with Sporting Lisbon and Cambridge United both picking up wins to keep the picture interesting. In Division 2, Birmingham City continue their serene march towards promotion with a point at Bayern Munich, while the bottom of the table grows increasingly desperate. Division 3 belongs to Bristol Rovers, who won again to open up a seven-point cushion at the summit. And in Division 4, Cardiff City and Borussia Dortmund remain level on 37 points – the two sides simply will not be separated.

This was also a player form week – every fifth match, the Matchday Magazine highlights the league’s standout performers by position. There were some eyecatching names across the tables, and a few clubs will be quietly encouraged by what they saw.

🏆 Division 1 – Vienna hold on as Bilbao make noise

Rapid Vienna’s grip on top spot is still there, but this week gave the chasing pack a little encouragement. Paul Lamming’s side went down 1-0 at home to Marseille – Varela with the only goal inside ten minutes – and found themselves unable to turn Allianz Stadion into the fortress it’s been for much of the campaign. With Sporting Lisbon also losing at home to Atletico Madrid, the league table didn’t shift dramatically, but Cambridge United’s 2-1 win over Rangers – Wright scoring twice, with Altidore pulling one back late for Carl Pavitt’s side – saw them climb to joint second with the Portuguese side.

💡 Athletic Bilbao are the form side in Division 1 right now. Their 2-0 win at Real Madrid – González scoring at 16 and 87 minutes – moved them to 11 points from their last five and into the top-half conversation. Three weeks ago they were in 13th. Peter Shuttleworth’s Atletico Madrid are right alongside them on recent form, and with Hearts dropping a place to fourth, the top five is genuinely congested.

At the bottom, Real Madrid’s James J E Harman is watching an extraordinary season spiral further. A fifth defeat in seven games, at home no less, leaves them 16th on 14 points. They continue to pull the division’s third-highest attendance – 56,901 through the gates this week – and yet the results simply do not come. Bayer Leverkusen are two points above them and only marginally more convincing, while Walsall’s 3-1 home win over Leverkusen – Rooney, Fowler and Volpato all on the scoresheet before Makin pulled one back – confirmed Michael Kensett’s side are a comfortable mid-table outfit with form that says they could climb further.

⚠️ Southend United’s 3-0 home win over West Ham before half time is the scoreline of the week in Division 1. Larsen completed a first-half hat-trick inside 39 minutes – goals at 19, 28 and 39 – and the game was wrapped up before the break. Sean Docherty’s side sit 7th with 29 points and are flying at home, even if their away record remains a concern. For Rocketman’s West Ham, now 11th and with four consecutive losses in their last five, the warning signs are there.

💙 Division 2 – Birmingham look uncatchable, Liverpool hit new low

Birmingham City dropped two points at Bayern Munich in a 0-0 draw, but such is their lead that Leigh Bailey’s side can afford the occasional slip without losing sleep. Six points clear of Paris Saint-Germain with eleven games to play, they are the most complete side in the division by some distance – seven home wins, five away, and a defensive record only three clubs in the entire league can match. The title looks decided in all but confirmation.

Middlesbrough moved into third with a composed 2-0 home win over Liverpool – Álvaro and Ansó the scorers – while Tottenham climbed two places to fourth after Boateng’s 33rd-minute winner against Salisbury. Portsmouth also did their promotion hopes no harm with a 2-1 comeback win over PSG, Meyer and Mendes scoring either side of Kanté’s reply, to move into eighth and firmly into the conversation.

🔍 The form table paints a vivid picture in Division 2. Birmingham lead it, Middlesbrough are second, and PSG and Tottenham both sit in the top four. But further down, Millwall – 6th in the table with 29 points – are quietly having a difficult run. One win in their last five and they’re slipping at a critical moment. Stuart Alexander’s Fulham, meanwhile, have the best home record in the division with five wins from five and just one goal conceded at Craven Cottage in that run – they’re third on paper but may well be the second-best side on current form.

At the foot of the table, Liverpool’s season is becoming a genuine low. Gilbert burnett’s side are bottom with 10 points and have now failed to score in five consecutive away matches, conceding 12 in the process. A 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough, in a ground where they’ve never looked remotely comfortable this season, extended the run. Fifteen games remain, but the gap to safety is growing.

❤️ Division 3 – Bristol Rovers remorseless, Milovanović on fire

Bristol Rovers simply will not be caught. David Griffiths’ side beat Barcelona 3-2 in a game that could have gone either way – Zekhnini with two and Eggestein in between, before Watkins pulled two back for Barcelona late on – but they held on, and a 43-point tally from 19 games puts them seven ahead of Aberdeen with eleven to play. The Memorial Stadium has been the fortress of the entire league this season: ten home games, ten wins, not a single point dropped.

Aberdeen kept up the pressure with a 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic, Pirès bagging a brace either side of half time and Gnonto adding a third, with Garnacho’s goal the only response from Wayne McCauley’s side. Paul Gilbert’s Dons have climbed a place to second and have now won four of their last five. Their goal difference of +13 gives them a mathematical cushion in the promotion picture.

💡 Milovanović continued his extraordinary week with a goal at 77 minutes to give Napoli a share of the spoils against Chelsea (1-1, Bekiroglu had given Chelsea the lead at 24 minutes). Bradley Hayward’s Napoli are sixth in the table but top of the away form chart in Division 3 over the last five games – four wins and 12 goals scored on the road. The player form table this week ranked Milovanović as the top attacker in the division by some distance, with a Momentum Form of 100% and an impact rating of Driving Force. He’s the name to watch in the second half of the season.

Down the table, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 2-1 win at Watford – both Neto goals coming inside three minutes midway through the first half – moved Dave Hayes’ side to 11th and gave them back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Crystal Palace and Chelsea sit joint-bottom on 13 points, both without a win in five, and both looking nervously at the fixtures ahead.

💛 Division 4 – Cardiff and Dortmund refuse to blink

After 19 games, Cardiff City and Borussia Dortmund remain inseparable. Both won this week – Cardiff beat AC Milan 1-0 through Ramsey’s 61st-minute strike, while Jody Downey’s Dortmund put Port Vale away 2-0, Crouch with both goals late on – and both sit on 37 points. Nonno Coia’s Cardiff have the superior goal difference (+13 to +10) but the lead could change hands any week. This is shaping up to be one of the season’s most compelling storylines.

Newcastle United climbed two places to fourth after D’Agostino’s opener in the first minute and Shearer’s second on 50 – a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest that moved Matthew’s side level on points with Leeds. Ryan Lee’s Leeds, meanwhile, had to settle for a goalless draw at home to Accrington Stanley, which keeps them level with Newcastle but slightly ahead on goal difference.

💡 The most eye-catching result in Division 4 came from Leyton Orient, who beat Manchester City 2-1 away from home. Manchester City took the lead through Cahill on 34 minutes, but Amorgin’s side turned it around through Weah and Kourfalidis. Leyton Orient are now 8th with 26 points, unbeaten in their last three, and with the best experience rating in the division (145). They’re a side that’s quietly put together a run – keep an eye on them.

⚠️ Ajax are in serious trouble. Johan Van Damme’s side drew 1-1 with York City this week, Kravets levelled after Júnior’s late equaliser made it level – but they remain bottom on 11 points. No home win in their last eight league games, no away clean sheet all season. The famous Dutch side are running out of runway in the race to avoid finishing bottom.

🔎 The wider league picture

This was a player form week, which means the Matchday Magazine spotlights the top performers by position across all four divisions. A few names stood out across the league. In Division 2, Verre leads the midfield form table with a perfect 100% Momentum Form rating, while Kanté, Meyer and Keitel are all in the top ten – Daffy Duck’s PSG in particular look well-stocked in the middle. In Division 3, Milovanović tops the attacker table ahead of Watkins and Eggestein, all three with form ratings above 97%. Division 4’s goalkeepers show Hofmann leading the division’s stoppers on 100% Momentum Form.

The score draw pool continues to build after no correct guesses in Week 18. Matt Rose of Lazio guessed the sole correct draw this week and collected the £1,600,000 jackpot – a nice payday for the Stadio Olimpico faithful.

Three clubs remain without managers across the league. Bayern Munich in Division 2 sit 14th on 18 points – the unmanaged side are holding their position for now but the season is entering the phase where points really start to matter. Crystal Palace in Division 3 are in the relegation zone in 15th on 13 points. Austria Vienna in Division 4 sit 10th on 23 points but have lost four of their last five. All three clubs are being run by the Supremos Circuit and are unable to participate in transfers, friendlies or voting until new management is appointed. The league will be hoping the vacancies are filled sooner rather than later.

🔍 The scoring charts are led by Stokes of Brighton and Bergkamp of Sporting Lisbon, both on 14 goals from the season. González of Athletic Bilbao moved to 12 goals after his brace against Real Madrid this week – three more than any other player in Division 1, and he’s been in fine form at exactly the right time for Loz Newbold’s side.

👋 Community and rivalries

Jamie was welcomed to the league this week as the new manager of Grimsby Town in Division 4 – the club had been declared unmanaged at the end of Week 18, so it’s good to see a manager step in quickly. Welcome, Jamie.

Bradford City became the latest club to reach the Rival Awareness milestone, meaning they are now monitoring and assessing rival clubs ahead of potential Official Rivalry status. The threshold of 200 rival score points is required before any club can declare an official rivalry, so there is still work to be done – but the seeds are being sown at Valley Parade.

On the pitch, Manchester United’s home game against Lazio produced the worst crowd trouble of the week – 61 arrests, 7 police officers injured and nearly £80,000 of stadium damage. Grimsby Town and Borussia Dortmund also had incidents involving their supporters. A poor week for the league’s disciplinary record.

Looking aheadWeek 20 brings some fascinating matchups across all four divisions. In Division 1, Rapid Vienna face Heart of Midlothian in what could be a defining game for both title challengers – Phil McCracken’s Hearts have points to recover after this week’s slip, while Paul Lamming’s Vienna will want to re-establish their lead after dropping points at home. In Division 4, Cardiff travel to Newcastle and Dortmund visit AC Milan on the same week – both results will matter enormously at the top. Eleven games remain. The season is entering the stretch where it starts to make sense.

L2 | S3 | W18: Gyökeres fires Arsenal’s hat-trick as Bristol Rovers make the Memorial Stadium a fortress

The standout individual performance of the week came from Gyökeres of Arsenal, who completed a hat-trick at Wolverhampton Wanderers — striking on 51, 52, and 76 minutes in a 3-1 win. Three goals in the second half, two of them within a minute of each other: the kind of display that makes you understand why Arsenal have jumped two places to seventh and look capable of a promotion challenge from here.

L2 | S3 | W20: Bradford City put four past Chelsea as Division 4 deadlock holds

Ten weeks to go and the European Elites is showing no signs of settling into predictability. Division 1 has a five-horse title race with the clubs separated by just six points. Division 4 has two sides who simply refuse to blink. And somewhere in Division 3, Bradford City travelled to Stamford Bridge and put four past Chelsea – the kind of result that makes you look twice at the scoreline before believing it.

L1 | S4 | W2: Rangers and West Ham share top spot as Forest Green Rovers announce themselves in Division 3

Across the four divisions there were already some eyebrow-raising results – a Rangers side thumping their way to six points, a brave Sutton United seeing off Liverpool in the cup, a Colchester United shipped three at home without reply, and a Forest Green Rovers with a rating of 671 somehow sitting quietly in Division 3. It’s early days, but the shape of things to come is starting to emerge.

L3 | S2 | W12: Richmond march on as Division 4 erupts into four-way chaos

Division 4 produced the most drama of any division this week. Abbey United – who came into the match as leaders – lost 1-0 at home to Grove Old Boys, Bartholomew’s 21st-minute goal enough to take the points and scramble the table entirely. Tantany Rangers, who were sitting third, beat Hillgrove United 2-0 (Buchanan 2′, Simmonds 72′) to go top. Brompton Hotspur beat Quinton Athletic 2-0 (Manfredi 18′, Maradona 67′). And Grove Old Boys’ win took them level with Abbey United on 21 points.
